FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Quebec City, QC – Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Services and Procurement, is calling on the House to support his motion M-63, which calls on the government to recognize the urgent need to combat the sexual exploitation of minors.
“During my role as Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, I worked in collaboration with members of the National Assembly of Quebec on the important issue of combating the sexual exploitation of minors,” said Paul-Hus. “I have continued to support Geneviève Guilbault, the Deputy Premier of Quebec who is responsible for the sexual exploitation of minors file, in order to strengthen laws and better protect our children.”
Pierre Paul-Hus is calling on the government to act quickly on this urgent issue and amend the Criminal Code in order to implement the recommendations made in the Select Committee on the Sexual Exploitation of Minors’ report that was unanimously adopted in the National Assembly of Quebec.
The motion calls on the federal government to act as quickly as possible to implement the recommendations from the Select Committee’s report to:
- Allow the implementation of the consecutive sentencing provision for human trafficking;
- Add crimes of sexual exploitation to the proceeds of forfeiture mechanism;
- Eliminate the preliminary inquiry in some sexual exploitation and human trafficking cases; and
- Provide law enforcement with more effective legal tools to obtain evidence of sexual crimes committed against minors and committed online in cyberspace.
“We must never forget that the sexual exploitation of minors and vulnerable adults has been on the rise over the past five years and that this industry generates huge profits for organized crime,” added Paul-Hus. “Quebecers have been clear, they want action. Let us work to secure the safety of minors and vulnerable Canadians, and put an end to sexual exploitation.”
