April 26, 2021, Ottawa, ON – Jag Sahota, Conservative Shadow Minister for Women and Gender Equality, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Services and Procurement, released the following statement about the addition of Iran to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women:

“Wednesday, countries on the United Nations Economic and Social Council chose to add Iran to the Commission on the Status of Women. For a country like Iran, which oppresses women and abuses human rights, to be a part of an organization tasked with the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women is completely unacceptable.

“Conservatives condemn the addition of Iran to the Commission on the Status of Women. Canada must stand for the principles of human rights and women’s equality around the world.

“Sadly, governments in a number of democracies chose to add Iran for a four-year term on the Commission. Conservatives are calling on Justin Trudeau to confirm that Canada did not vote to elect Iran to the Commission.

“Canada’s Conservatives will always stand up for the promotion of women’s rights, at home and around the world, can Justin Trudeau say the same?”
