May 21, 2021, Ottawa, ON – Jag Sahota, Conservative Shadow Minister for Women and Gender Equality, the Hon. Rob Moore, Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Services and Procurement, issued the following statement regarding the increase of violence toward women during COVID-19:

“Women and their families across Canada have been disproportionately affected by domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. On Tuesday, Quebec had the eleventh femicide this year – many of which were perpetrated by men with a record of violence. This is unacceptable.

“Conservatives have put forward solutions to better monitor individuals with a history of domestic violence, to address the sexual exploitation of minors, and have advocated for amending the Privacy Act to enable Canadians to find out if their partner has a history of domestic violence.

“Canadians can’t afford more empty promises and recommendations that fall on deaf ears – not when the lives of our daughters, sisters, mothers, and grandmothers are at stake.

“It’s time for all parties to put politics aside and support these Conservative initiatives. Only Canada’s Conservatives are putting forward concrete steps to ensure that women are better protected from gender-based violence.”
