Liberals prioritize violent criminals’ rights over victims’ rights

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Rob Moore, Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Services and Procurement, released the following statement on the Liberals’ failure to stand up for victims’ rights:
“Time and time again, we see the Trudeau Liberals putting the rights of criminals ahead of the rights of victims of crime and their families.
“While the Liberals are focused on passing legislation to eliminate mandatory jail time for violent criminals, they’re refusing to stand up for victims’ rights, refusing to conduct a mandated review of crucial legislation, and refusing to fill the ombudsman position to ensure that the needs of victims are being met. They’re trampling over victims’ rights.
“The Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime position has remained vacant for nearly six months, and the Victim Bill of Rights review is now two years overdue. This is just the latest example of the Liberals failing to stand up for victims’ rights after they previously left the Ombudsman role vacant for over a year.
“Conservatives are calling on the government to immediately conduct a review of the Victims Bill of Rights and to immediately fill the vital role of Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime. The federal government must do its job to support victims of crime and their families.”
